This region is called "the Golden Strip of Bohemia" on account of its fertile land.
It is here where we find the highest mountains of Bohemia, varied landscapes, castles, chateaux and traditional folk architecture. The countryside is excellent for tourism, holidaying and winter sports. The most visited and most beautiful area is Krkonoše (the Giant Mountains). The highest point is Sněžka which reaches 1602 m a.s.l. Many kinds of Alpine vegetation grow here, such as the dwarf pine, and, in areas of water springs, the upper reaches of the streams are adormed by waterfalls and cataracts. The Pančava Waterfall, for example, is high 130 m. Krkonoše was declared a National Park. This area has also its own folklore and tales. The mythical keeper of the mountains is Krakonoš, protector of poors and weaks. In winter, visitors can enjoy the superb ski runs which are excellent for both beginners and very good skiers. |
